About 'The Light is on For You'

Confession, Penance, Reconciliation: CPR for the Soul

"The Light Is On For You" is a Lenten initiative to encourage, educate and assist Catholics to experience God’s mercy in the sacrament of reconciliation.

Confession, penance and reconciliation — all three words refer to the sacrament that brings the healing gift of God’s forgiveness. Many Catholics who have stopped going to confession mistakenly liken the sacrament to a trip to the dentist. This unfortunate misconception discourages too many Catholics from experiencing the grace and peace of reconciliation. Think of the sacrament as CPR for the soul. In the words of Pope Francis, the sacrament "regenerates us."

Here you will find "CPR" advice, information and instructions to help you experience the Lord’s compassion in confession. We hope practicing Catholics will accept the invitation to grow in appreciation for reconciliation and practice it regularly. It also is our hope that non-practicing Catholics will accept the invitation to return to confession no matter how long it’s been, and to the welcoming embrace of the church and its sacraments.

"The Light Is On For You" was initiated in 2007 by the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. The Diocese of Arlington joined the next year. Since then, Washington and Arlington have helped dozens of dioceses start their own initiatives. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops began promoting the program to all dioceses in 2012.

The Seattle Archbishop and council of priests decided to adopt "The Light Is On For You" during Lent 2014. Each pastor determines how "The Light Is On For You" is implemented in his parish, along with other Lenten devotions.
